Swan Group and its architects Pollard Thomas Edwards and C.F. Møller were successful at the Housing Design Awards this week, with judges awarding their plans for the regeneration of Laindon Shopping Centre the coveted 'Best Regeneration' award.
Swan appointed Pollard Thomas Edwards and C.F. Møller as joint architects both because of their architectural expertise but also their willingness to engage with Swan and the local community to design a scheme which had outstanding design quality but was retail led and would rejuvenate the wider town centre. The scheme will incorporate Swan's precision engineered modular homes which will be built in Swan's new factory in Basildon under the NU build brand.
The Judges said
"This is a heroic project to completely redevelop the high street and town centre of this Essex village and forge a completely new urban character in the process. Moreover, it promises a design quality and ambition normally seen in areas that command higher property values and is driven by a developer not normally associated with projects of this kind. The scheme will treat the town centre to a vibrant and highly varied new townscape of folded pitched and mono-pitch roofs and brick, timber and metal cladding. New housing will be placed above retail and surrounded by a rejuvenated public realm."
Geoff Pearce, Executive Director of Regeneration and Development at Swan said:
"As a long standing local housing provider, with a clear social purpose, we are committed to the redevelopment of the Laindon Centre. Residents have waited too long to see this happen and, in addition to the great feedback from local stakeholders and the unanimous planning approval we have already obtained, this award recognises our commitment to bringing the highest quality of design and public realm to Laindon to create the vibrant, retail led scheme that the local community wants and deserves."
Carl Vann, Partner, Pollard Thomas Edwards commented:
"We are delighted that Laindon has been recognised with a Housing Design Award. The project represents how new, well designed homes can be integrated with other uses to regenerate failing town centre locations. It also demonstrates a genuine collaboration between a pioneering client and two architectural practices working closely in tandem."
Rolf Nielsen, Associate Partner, C.F. Møller Architects said:
"It has been a great privilege to work on this project and we are delighted that the combined efforts of Swan, our architectural partners PTE and the wider Design Team have been recognised by this prestigious award. This project is a testimony to how engaging with local residents during the design process can lead to placemaking of great quality and human scale."
At the awards, Geoff Pearce gave a presentation on Swan's regeneration of Craylands as "Beechwood" and the launch of Swan's precision engineered, modular housing which will be built in Swan's new factory in Basildon, first for Beechwood, then for the Laindon Centre regeneration.
